Hazardous Household Waste

TRANSFER STATION WILL BE CLOSED FOR REGULAR BUSINESS DURING HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION DAY.

What to bring:

Household Hazardous Waste no longer needed, 10 gallons or 80 pounds, kept in sealed containers (original with screw cap, if possible).  For example:

  • Oil Based Paints & Strippers

  • Paint Thinner, Stains & Varnishes

  • Solvent Adhesives

  • Lighter Fluid

  • Waste Fuels: Gasoline, Kerosene, Antifreeze, Engine Degreaser, Brake Fluid, Carburetor Cleaner, Transmission Fluid, Car Wax

  • Poisons, Insecticides, Chemical Fertilizers

  • Weed Killers, Moth Balls

  • Swimming Pool Chemicals

  • Wood Preservatives

  • No pest Strips, Flea Powder

  • Hobby Supplies, Artist Supplies

  • Rubber Cement, Airplane Glue

  • Driveway Sealer, Roofing Tar

  • Fiberglass Resins

  • Photo Chemicals

  • Cleaning Supplies

  • Furniture, Floor and Metal Polish

  • Oven, Drain and Toilet Cleaners

  • Rug and Upholstery Cleaner

  • Spot Remover

  • Dry Cleaning Solvents

  • Septic Tank Degreasers

  • Pesticides containing 2, 4, 5T, Silvex

  • Mercury Thermometers, thermostats, switches

  • Fluorescent bulbs

  • Asbestos, 25 pounds or less (wet with water and bag in tow heavy plastic garbage bags)

What NOT to bring:

  • Empty Containers/Trash

  • Latex Paint

  • Commercial or Industrial Waste

  • Ammunition, Fireworks, Explosives

  • Radioactive Waste

  • Propane Cylinders, Pressurized Cylinders

  • Infectious & Biological Wastes

  • Prescription Medicines/Syringes

  • Fire Extinguishers

  • Smoke Detectors

  • Alkaline Batteries/Household Batteries (AA, AAA, CD, D, etc.)

    • Alkaline batteries made after 1996 no longer contain mercury. All alkaline batteries can be disposed of in the regular trash.

How can I be safe in transporting these hazardous materials?

  • Tighten caps and lids, leaving materials in original labeled containers.

  • Sort and pack separately; oil paint, pesticides and household cleaners.

  • Pack containers in sturdy upright boxes and pad with newspaper.

  • Do not place container in a garbage bag.

  • NEVER MIX CHEMICALS.

  • Pack your car and drive directly to the site.

  • NEVER SMOKE WHILE HANDLING HAZARDOUS MATERIALS.

Will some materials be refused?

  • We have listed material that will not be accepted.  We also reserve the right to refuse unidentified materials and large amounts of hazardous waste.
 
LETS TALK ABOUT LATEX PAINT:

Latex paint is not accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Day.  Unlike oil based paints that contain solvents and must be cleaned up with mineral spirits or other solvents, latex paint contains water and the instructions recommend clean up with water.

In order to properly dispose of latex paint, use the following paint-drying techniques:

For small amounts of latex paint:

  • Remove the lid and let the paint dry in the can.  Stir the paint occasionally for speed drying; or
  • Brush paint in layers on newspaper or cardboard.  When dry, place in trash.

For larger amounts of latex paint:

  • Pour one-inch layers of paint into a cardboard box lined with plastic.  Allow the paint to dry one layer at a time; thin layers will speed up the drying process; or
  • Mix paint with cat litter, sawdust or sand in a cardboard box lined with plastic and let dry then place in trash.

USED OIL:

Used motor and transmission oil and residential oil filters may be taken to the District Recycling Center during regular business hours (Mon. - Sat., 7AM to 4PM) and left with the attendant for recycling.

"Do it yourself" auto mechanics who change their own motor oil produce 120 million gallons of recoverable oil each year. Remember that one quart of oil soaked into the ground can pollute one million gallons of groundwater.

WHY SHOULD I BE CONCERNED ABOUT HAZARDOUS WASTE?

Many of the common products we use daily in our kitchen, bath, yard garage and basement pose a hazard if handled and/or disposed of improperly. Many of these household cleaning products contain hazardous chemicals which are toxic to the user and to the environment.

It is estimated that the average American household has three to ten gallons of unwanted hazardous chemicals in the garage, basement, shed and kitchen. Household toxins can cause respiratory problems, burns, poisoning, nausea, headaches and dizziness. They can be harmful if swallowed, absorbed through the skin, or by the inhalation of vapors.

Contamination of our water and natural resources is a very real threat from the improper disposal of ALL household hazardous wastes. Toxics that are rinsed down the drain enter into municipal treatment plants or leach fields which are incapable of handling these products. The result is the eventual contamination of our water supplies with disastrous consequences.

DO NOT POUR HAZARDOUS WASTES DOWN THE DRAIN, ON THE GROUND OR INTO A POND, RIVER OR LAKE; DO NOT BURN THEM; DO NOT BURY THEM AND DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE TRASH...BRING THEM TO THE ANNUAL AVRRDD HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION!
